  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Learning to Give a Hoot: Open Access Workflows for Academic Librarians (OAWAL) Author: Emery, Jill Year: 2014 Graham Stone and Jill Emery have been working to try to develop an outline of some of the best practices for managing open access workflow management in academic libraries. In March 2014, we went live with OAWAL (pronounced owl): a crowdsourced blog/wiki to develop some of these practices and learn what innovators and experts in the field of scholarly communications and open access management have been doing. Our project is international in scope and relies heavily on countries such as the UK where country mandates are driving the development of workflows and management tools. This presentation will focus on recent developments both in the US & UK with open access management and will also draw from recent input sessions held at the Charleston Conference. This workshop will focus on the creation of workflows from the six functional areas of electronic resource lifecycle for varying types of resources: ebooks, ejournals/back-files/databases, and archive collections. This workshop builds on the ALA-Pre-Conference given in Summer 2013. This session will be more hands-on and activity focused with groups reporting back to the whole workshop on ideas developed in smaller teams. This will enable attendees to take best practice from the TERMS project and lessons learned in a practical and applicable way by the end of the workshop. A relatively new upstart company, Reveal Digital <http://www.revealdigital.com/> has begun developing digital archives of primary resources which are funded by institutions pledging upfront support. The eventual result of this work will be collections made available as Open Access content to everyone. The majority of the content is being sourced from research libraries’ archival collections. Those pledging money get early access to the content as it is being digitized and made available. In addition, source libraries obtain digital copies that they can dark archive. Pledging libraries also gain MARC records and COUNTER compliant usage statistics. Reveal Digital makes no claims on copyright to the material. After a designated period, the content will be made available as Open Access resources. All-in-all, this is an exciting new model in regards to primary resources that often cost librarians tens of thousands of dollars with sometimes hefty on-going access fees levied. In Europe and the United Kingdom, librarians are busy tracking the scholarship produced by their institutions and developing formula to obtain what is described as the total cost of publication at their given institutions. Given the lack of significant mandates for open access in North America, most academic librarians involved with collections and acquisitions work have remained focused on cost per use as opposed to the total cost of publication. Let's explore the transition from cost per use to total cost of publication and the mechanisms needed for tracking and evaluating packages in the hybrid academic publishing environment.
