It is, and always has been, greatly affected and inspired by interstate migration yet each successive generation has been less than welcoming to further migration. Today, Oregon is a desirable destination for retirement-aged migrants for its scenic beauty and mild seasons. This essay will use census data from 2000 to describe the characteristics associated with retirement-age migrants to Oregon. Multinomial logistic regression analysis is used to compare retirement-aged Oregon in-migrants with Oregon non-movers, Oregon out-migrants and non-movers and out-migrants of the states from which in-migrants to Oregon originated. In three cases, the characteristics effecting the decision to migrate are determined by comparing a migrant group population with its respective non-mover population. This essay is a useful tool for those seeking to understand the characteristics important to retirement-age migration to Oregon as well as the factors influencing the migration decision. Working primarily with the personal testimonies of people who have migrated to the United States has revealed that urbanization has played a major role in the lives of many transnational migrants, many of whom only resorted to international migration when their ability to migrate and work in Mexican cities was compromised. By looking at changes in Mexican migration over a century, it becomes clear that transnational migration only occurs en masse as a result disruption. Women in Transition: The Mexican Family, Migration, and the Mothers of Casa de los Angeles is broken into three parts: methodology, history of migration and gender roles, and in Mexico, the examination of interviews from mothers in San Miguel de Allende. Methodology explores the various ways historian collect oral histories. I focus my research on ten historians’ works that study the challenges with collecting oral history. The history of migration and gender roles is titled “Women in Transition: A Study of Migration History, Sending Communities, and Women’s Gender Roles in Mexico.” This studies a brief history of migration beginning with the Bracero Program of 1942. Following the history, I analyze women’s roles within sending communities. Sending communities are part of the transnational community, where the people in the communities either migrate or remain at home while family members leave to find work. The last part is titled “Women in Both Worlds.” This section concentrates on the women who migrate to the United States and their expected role as a woman in the household. The final section is titled “The Women of San Miguel de Allende.” The section spotlights the ten interviews from mothers at the non-profit organization, Casa de los Angeles. This section brings together the women’s stories of migration, family, and life at Casa de los Angeles. Using life history interviews, three Sri-Lankan womens' migration experiences are examined for the ways in which personal networks were utilized in various phases of the migration process and how social and human capital was transformed in the post-migration adjustment process. Though in some instances the data did not fully support Boyd's (1989) predictions of the ways in which personal networks affect migration, overall, both Boyd's and Kopijn's (1998) statements that social capital is transmitted and transformed in the migration process are supported. The analysis indicates that all three women were successful in their post migration adjustment in that they were able to retain a strong sense of identity while adopting new practices in the United States.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: The Metropolitan-Nonmetropolitan Turnaround in the Pacific States (California, Oregon, and Washington): Labor Migration Flows and Economic Deconcentration Author: McLean, Beverly Marie Year: 1992 This dissertation examines the turnaround of labor force migration patterns in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington in the 1970s. The focus of the dissertation is the simultaneous phenomena of economic deconcentration and employment migration in nonmetropolitan counties during the turnaround period. The theoretical approach of the research draws from the disciplines of economics, geography, and sociology to develop a model that addresses what attributes of areas attract labor migration flows. The study specifies that labor migration is a function of economic activities, the environment, and accessibility. The research focus is the role that economic and noneconomic factors play in attracting labor migration flows. The spatial focus is the counties in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. The temporal focus of study is the period between 1965 and 1975. The results of the research affirm the complexity of migration modelling. A test of equality of coefficients of the different periods investigated show significant differences between the turnaround and preturnaround models. The data results show just a few of the noneconomic factors are a major determinant of the nonmetropolitan turnaround. The model results show several unexpected results. Several of the coefficients in the models have the opposite sign of what originally was expected. Another unexpected outcome of the research is the apparent symmetry of labor in-migration and labor out-migration coefficients. A formal test for symmetry, however, shows the models are significantly different. This study finds that the economic deconcentration process in the Pacific states is not one in which metropolitan growth spilled over into the nonmetropolitan counties. Rather both the metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties simultaneously experienced deindustrializing (a decline of manufacturing employment and growth of service employment). The service related employment activity has a major influence on employment growth in the Pacific states. Although employment change does not show a significant influence on labor migration flows, labor migration does show a significant influence on employment growth in several of the model results. New literature on migration and development suggests that migrants play a role of financial intermediaries, making it possible for households to overcome credit constraints in their capability to attain the transition from small-scale, self-sufficient agriculture, to a market oriented production. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of migration on farm and non-farm income at a household level. Using a simultaneous equation model and data from a rural household survey from Mexico, I have tested the hypothesis that neither remittances nor migration have an effect on farm and non-farm income. The econometric findings suggest that the loss of labor to migration has a significant direct negative effect on non-farm income but the direct effect on farm income is not statistically significant. However, there is evidence that remittances have a significant positive effect on both income sources, so that migration has an indirect effect that might compensate for the loss of labor. It looks into the different stages of migration to understand some of the cultural, economic and social transformations women domestic workers experience as immigrants and laborers in the Gulf region and upon their return to Ethiopia. In doing so, the study examines the different ways women try to renegotiate and reintegrate with their families and communities. In-depth interviews with eighteen women returnees reveal the uneven distribution of experiences and outcomes of gendered migration. However, there exists some consistency in the disruptive and disempowering effect of these experiences in the destination countries that usually extend after return. Post return experiences reveal that the renegotiations of women returnees on issues of reception, economic betterment, relationship rebuilding and exercising agency with families and communities are often stressful, isolating and disempowering.
