The Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain is the ‘‘type’’ example of an age-progressive, hot spotgenerated intraplate volcanic lineament. However, our current knowledge of the age distribution within this province is based largely on radiometric ages determined several decades ago. Improvements in instrumentation, sample preparation methods, and new material obtained by recent drilling warrant a reexamination of the age relations among the older Hawaiian volcanoes. We report new age determinations (40Ar-39Ar incremental heating method) on whole rocks and feldspar separates from Detroit (Sites 1203 and 1204), Nintoku (Site 1205), and Koko (Site 1206) Seamounts (Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 197) and Meiji Seamount (Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 19, Site 192). Plateaus in incremental heating age spectra for Site 1203 lava flows give a mean age of 75.8 ± 0.6 (2s) Ma, which is consistent with the normal magnetic polarity directions observed and biostratigraphic age assignments. Site 1204 lavas produced discordant spectra, indicating Ar loss by reheating and K mobilization. Six plateau ages from lava flows at Site 1205 give a mean age of 55.6 ± 0.2 Ma, corresponding to Chron 24r. Drilling at Site 1206 intersected a N-R-N magnetic polarity sequence of lava flows, from which six plateau ages give a mean age of 49.1 ± 0.2 Ma, corresponding to the Chron 21n-22r-22n sequence. Plateau ages from two feldspar separates and one lava from DSDP Site 192 range from 34 to 41 Ma, significantly younger than the Cretaceous age of overlying sediments, which we relate to postcrystallization K mobilization. Combined with new dating results from Suiko Seamount (DSDP Site 433) and volcanoes near the prominent bend in the lineament [Sharp and Clague, 2002], the overall trend is increasing volcano age from south to north along the Emperor Seamounts, consistent with the hot spot model. However, there appear to be important departures from the earlier modeled simple linear age progression, which we relate to changes in Pacific plate motion and the rate of southward motion of the Hawaiian hot spot. Morphological measurements, such as carapace length, are often used to estimate age because methods for direct ageing do not exist. However, variability in individual growth rate and molt frequency can result in a wide distribution of sizes in a single age class, making length a poor predictor of true age. Research examining the autofluorescent age pigment, lipofuscin, suggests that concentration of the pigment in neural tissues is directly related to actual age. Analysis of lipofuscin concentration has already proven to be a more effective method for determining true age in several species of crustaceans than traditional, length-based methods. The ghost shrimp, Neotrypaea californiensis, negatively impacts oyster aquaculture in Pacific Northwest estuaries. Current efforts to develop an integrated pest management plan for this species would benefit from better information on the age and growth of these animals. This study assessed the potential of using extractable lipofuscin as a method for determining age in N. californiensis. A growth study was conducted to validate the lipofuscin aging technique and develop a practical method of age determination for this species. Lipofuscin-based aging was used to determine age structures for three populations of N. californiensis and these were compared to age structures determined using traditional length-based methods. Age structures determined with analysis of lipofuscin concentration revealed several more age classes than assessments based on carapace length measurements in all sampled populations. Comparison of mean size-at- age among populations in Oregon and Washington estuaries showed growth rate varied spatially. Site-specific environmental factors like food availability, population density and tidal elevation may affect individual and population growth patterns. In this study, analysis of extractable lipofuscin proved to be a more accurate method of age determination than body-length measurements. The data presented here show that biochemical-based aging can now be widely used to assess age in N. californiensis, facilitating more in-depth investigations of basic biological and ecological processes for this species. The aging is usually observed as an improvement of some properties and a deterioration of others. For example an increase of rigidity and strength and reduction in toughness with time are commonly observed in engineering materials. In an attempt to model aging phenomena on a continuum (macroscopical) level one faces three major tasks. The first is to identify an adequate age parameter that represents, on a macroscopic scale, the micro and sub microscopical features, underlying the aging phenomena such as nucleation, growth and coalescence of microdefects, physico-chemical transformations etc. The age parameter should be considered as a parameter of state, in addition to the conventional parameters such as stress tensor and temperature. The second task consists of formulation of a constitutive equation of aging, i.e., equations of age parameter evolution expressed in terms of controlling factors, e.g., load and temperature. It is expected that at common circumstances a small variation of controlling factors results in a small variation of age parameter. However, at certain conditions, a sudden large variation of age parameter may result from a small perturbation of controlling factors. Experimental examination, classification and analysis of the condition that lead to such a catastrophic behavior, constitute the third task of the modeling. Formulation of local failure criteria within the scope of continuum mechanics is an example of this task. In many engineering materials the aging is manifested in variations of mass density as well as in the spectrum of relaxation time. Thus in a macroscopic test the aging can be detected in variations of intrinsic (material) length and time scales. Following this notion, in the present paper we employ the material metric tensor G as an age parameter. An evolution of Gin 4D -material space-time determines in our approach an inelastic behavior and time dependent material properties recorded by an external observer. The objective of the present work is to derive the constitutive equations of aging based on Extremal Action Principle. The variational approach seems to be most promising in view of complexity of the problem and lack of experimental data. It provides with a guide line for the experimental examination of the basic assumptions and modifications, if necessary.
